This is my grandmother’s handwritten recipe. She was renowned for her pie crusts although when I tried it, it failed spectacularly. I’ve found other recipes I like better, but for tradition’s sake and for anyone else who might be able to succeed where I have failed, I’m posting it here. After all, isn’t that the TRUE definition of family recipes?
2 cups sugar
1½ sticks butter OR 1 heaping mixing spoon high grade shortening
1 cup whole milk
2 tsp vanilla extract
8 tsp baking powder
7½ cups flour, or more if needed.
- Cream sugar and shortening/butter together. Add eggs, one at a time, and continue to beat until creamy. Add milk and vanilla and blend into batter. Sift flour and baking powder into mixture and mix well.
- Roll out on floured surface. Line pie pan with dough. Fill with fruit or custard. Add crust strippings to top. Bake at 350 until brown.
Makes 6-8-in. pies.
