This is my grandmother’s handwritten recipe.  She was renowned for her pie crusts although when I tried it, it failed spectacularly.  I’ve found other recipes I like better, but for tradition’s sake and for anyone else who might be able to succeed where I have failed, I’m posting it here.  After all, isn’t that the TRUE definition of family recipes?

3 eggs

2 cups sugar

1½ sticks butter OR 1 heaping mixing spoon high grade shortening

1 cup whole milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

8 tsp baking powder

7½ cups flour, or more if needed.

  1. Cream sugar and shortening/butter together. Add eggs, one at a time, and continue to beat until creamy.  Add milk and vanilla and blend into batter.  Sift flour and baking powder into mixture and mix well.
  2. Roll out on floured surface.  Line pie pan with dough.  Fill with fruit or custard.  Add crust strippings to top.  Bake at 350 until brown.

Makes 6-8-in. pies.
