2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup sugar

2 tea. baking powder

1/4 tea. baking soda

1/4 tea.  salt

3 T plus 1 tea. chilled stick butter cut into small pieces

3/4 cup 1% low-fat buttermilk


Combine first 5 ingredients in a bowl; cut in chilled butter with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.  Add buttermilk, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened.


Turn dough out onto a floured surface; knead 4 or 5 times.  Roll dough to 1/2 in. thickness; cut with a 2 1/2 in. biscuit cutter.  Place on a baking sheet and bake @ 450 for 12 min or until golden.  Yields 1 dozen.
